Health benefits of using mustard seeds

In Ayurveda mustard seeds are used for both internal as well as external purpose.
The Botanical name of mustard types: 
White mustard, Yellow mustard – Sinapis alba
Black mustard – Brassica nigra L. Koch


Major chemical constituents of mustard seeds- Rutin, Arabinogalactan


Part used- Seed, seed oil
Dosage- Seed powder 2-4 g

According to Ayurveda mustard comes under 
a group of herb which is 

helpful in reliving itching and worm infection

useful in decoction enemas and nasya treatment

Health benefits of Mustard:

Uses of white mustard

It acts as cardiac tonic.


It is helpful in improving digestion strength.


It is often used in skin diseases like itching and pruritis.


It is useful in throat and voice related disorders.


It help relives headache, abdomen pain and worm infection.


Uses of red mustard

Red mustard is slightly sweet but heavy to digest in comparison to white mustard.


It’s uses are similar to that of white mustard, but white mustard is better.


Uses of black mustard

Black mustard is pungent, bitter and hot in nature.

It helps to induce sleep.

It is useful in skin diseases and inflammation.

It is helpful in treating tumors of the abdomen.


External use of mustard seeds

Mustard seeds can be externally applied in wounds, abscess and swellings.

Mustard paste is applied in the initial stage of pus formation, before incision and draining pus out.


In cases of wounds with clot, a thin layer of mustard paste is applied to gets rid of it.


It relieves pain and swelling associated with wound / abscess / edema.


Mustard paste for neurological conditions

External application of mustard paste in cases of paralysis, helps to improve blood circulation and provide warmth to the body.

In case of petechial patches, sub cutaneous bleeding spots, mustard application helps to relieve the patches, pain and burning sensation.


In case of arthritis and other joint conditions with stiffness, as in rheumatoid arthritis, mustard paste application helps to improve warmth and joint flexibility.


Mustard paste for skin problems


In cases of skin disorders involving itching and pain, mustard paste application is useful.


How to make mustard paste?


Ground the mustard seed with water and made into paste.


Apply this paste over the affected area for 5 – 10 minutes, then remove the paste.


Alternatively, this paste can be applied to a wet cloth and then the cloth is wrapped over the affected area.


Remove the paste immediately if person feels burning sensation.


Side effects of mustard seeds :


Avoid the use of mustard seeds in cases of excess burning sensation, burning urination, bleeding disorders and gastritis.


Use it in small quantity for children, during pregnancy and lactation mother.


Avoid the use of mustard leaves as it has hot and strong piercing qualities that can cause burning sensation.


How to use mustard seeds?


How to use mustard:The best way to use mustard seed is by consuming regularly 1 –  2 grams in diet. 

For therapeutic purpose, its powder is administered to be taken along with honey.
