Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)- proven health benefits, uses and side effects

Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), naturally occurring in green plants, fruits and vegetables, has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. MSM is an organosulfur compound and a normal oxidative metabolite of dimethyl sulfoxide.

Health benefits and uses of MSM

Skin problem

In a study, the combination of MSM anf milk thistle contributes to the improvement of the symptoms of rosacea. In particular, improvement of skin redness, papules, itching, hydration, and skin color occurred.

Osteoarthritis and pain management

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and the second most common cause of long-term disability among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. In a study, MSM supplementation has therapeutic value in osteoarthritis.

Studies has shown that MSM improves symptoms of pain and physical function in those with osteoarthritis.

Allergies

MSM helps to provide relief from allergies and is useful for Seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). Study shows that MSM relieves symptoms in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. It helps to improve respiratory symptoms associated with allergies.

Antioxidants and improve exercise performance

Studies indicate that oral supplementation of MSM has alleviating effects on known markers of oxidative stress following acute bouts of exercise in healthy young men.

Anti-Inflammatory and useful in Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Toxicity

MSM helps to ease pain and reduce inflammation at various parts of the body.

Studies has shown that MSM has therapeutic value in treatment of ulcerative colitis.

In another study, methylsulfonylmethane has anti-inflammatory effects against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammatory responses in murine macrophages.

Lipopolysaccharide toxicity or endotoxin are responsible for various health problems including obesity, autoimmune disease, has negative impact on kidney, adernal glands and lungs, damage to the endothelial layer of blood vessels that reduces the cardiac function and can lead to septic shock.

MSM act as anti-inflammatory agent and helps to to reduce toxicity associated with lipopolysaccharide.

Words of caution

MSM is possible safe for most people when taken by mouth for 3 months or less when applied to the skin in combination with other ingredients, such as milk thistle, and tea tree oil for up to 20 days.

In some cases, MSM might cause nausea, diarrhea, bloating, fatigue, headache, insomnia, itching, or worsening of allergy symptoms.

There is no sufficient data about the safety of using MSM during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.
